SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE - RECLAIMING THE SPECTACLE

The Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Laboratory for Research & Documentation of Modern Greek Theatre, in collaboration with the research project The Unlikely Margin of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Austrian Science Fund T1336-G), are organizing the international conference:

“Reclaiming the Spectacle”

The conference focuses on performative and embodied practices of spectacle, examining them as strategic tools of expression, resistance, and self-determination from marginalized social positions. It approaches spectacle as a field of critical analysis and emancipation, drawing from the broad domain of Critical Dance Studies and the performing arts.

Thematic axes include:

  • Spectacle practices in uncharted geographical and historical contexts (focus on Greece & the Mediterranean, 19th–20th century)

  • Spectacle and marginalization (migration, diaspora, class/gender/race-based discrimination)

  • Détournements of entertainment and spectacularity

  • Contemporary practices using new technologies (AI, big data, metadata)

Types of contributions:

  • Theoretical papers

  • Practice-based research presentations

  • Lecture-performances

The call is open to early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and PhD holders.
Submissions may be in Greek or English.
